Purchasing The Wijit

By following the directions in these forms, and providing all of the needed information, you will be well on your way towards purchasing the Wijit!

Note that The Wijit Company does not currently handle any insurance claims. You will need to go through a registered Durable Medical Equipment Dealer (DME) or optionally, deal directly with your insurance company.

Reimbursement

Working with your local durable medical equipment (DME) dealer is often a good way for finding out about geting reimbursement for the Wijit. In many cases, the DME dealer who sold you your wheelchair will already have your insurance on record, simplifying the process.

For some other helpful reimbursement information, consider the following:

The Wijit is reimbursed by most private insurance, Medicare (HCPCS code E0988), and Medi-caid in many states including Medi-Cal in California – unfortunately this does not guarantee reimbursement. Reimbursement documents can be filled out by either a DME, medical staff or the patient. Insurance companies make their own determination on coverage or reimbursement based on individual consideration.

If you are a disabled veteran and receive healthcare through the Veterans Administration, they are the best first step to understanding how to purchase your own Wijit. You should make an appointment with your physical or occupational therapist to discuss the Wijit.

Wijit Models for Purchase

Coming in early July, the Wijit DBS will be available in two standard models: the Tetra and Voyager!

Built for the average adult user, the Tetra comes as a pair of 24-inch wheels – ideal for replacing the majority of manual wheelchair wheels that come standard from wheelchair manufacturers.

The Voyager, with its smaller 20 inch wheel, is designed to accommodate the needs of children and some smaller adults. While wheel size may separate the Voyager from the Tetra, the Voyager still has all of the same features and benefits that come with its larger cousin!

At this time, the new Wijits (both the Tetra and Voyager) will only be available in our subdued black color. The black colored Wijits are sleek and sporting – and they look great on every color of wheelchair! Note that future offerings will be available in a variety of colors... and even some custom patterns! Keep an eye on our website for future available options.

The following are a list of specifications that apply to both the Tetra and the Voyager models:

The Wijit comes as a left and right wheel pair – they replace your wheelchair's wheels
All models are currently only available in black
Tires are solid polyurethane: the Tetra has a black tire measuring 24 inches tall by 1 inch wide; the Voyager has a gray tire measuring 20 inches tall by 1 inch wide
Each Tetra levered wheel assembly weighs approximately 10 pounds; each Voyager wheel weighs approximately 9 pounds
The Wijit adds between 1 to 3 inches to the wheelchair's width
All Wijits come complete with gearing, shifters, built-in brakes, and push rims
They are compatible with the wheelchair's original anti-tip bars, grade-aids and parking brakes

Wijit Options

In the future, when ordering your Wijit DBS Tetra or Voyager, you will have several options. Our current options include your choice of the Standard Shift Grip or the new Paddle Shifter. We also offer a Range of Motion (ROM) setting for the Lever Arms. Future versions of the Wijit DBS will include color and pattern options for the Wijit's Lever Arm.

Shifter Options

The Standard Shifter is for those with adequate hand grip and dexterity that prefer not to have the short paddle in the way of their gripping the Shifter. For those with limited hand grip and dexterity we have the new Paddle Shifter allow you better shifting control without having to take your hands off the lever Hand Grips. When ordering your Wijits be sure to specify whether you would like the Standard Shifter or the new Paddle Shifter!

Range of Motion Options

The Wijit comes standard with a full Range of Motion (ROM), starting from Park Position (90°) behind your shoulder, all the way down to parallel to the floor (0°). This option allows for users with limited reach to utilize the full extension of their arms and ensures the ability to retrieve the Levers easily should they lose their grip. For some users, the 0° setting is too far forward, making the handles difficult to reach when fully forward.

To help with limited reach concerns, the Wijit can be ordered with these optional ROM adjustments: 0°, 15°, 30°, or 45° – making it easier to reach the handles when they are in the full forward position (note: when the ROM is moved up, it reduces the length of the available power stroke).

Note: When the Wijit levers are at 90° this is also known as the “Park Position”. When stationary, at a desk or table, the Wijit levers can be stowed in the Park Position – allowing them to be out of the way. This is also useful when push-rim use is preferred, while being pushed by others or when the Wijit is not in use.

Accessories for the Wijit

The Wijit has several accessories that can add utility to it – sometimes ideal for specific users. Below is a list of quick links to helpful accessories for the Wijit:

Power Extenders (to help certain users by making the lever's “rowable”)
Push Rim/Hand Rim Grips (to help make the Wijit's push rim easier to grasp or get friction against)

Power Extenders

Power Extenders are available for the Wijit as an alternative method to propel them. Much like a rowing, Power Extenders are angled in, allowing a push and pull method of propulsion.

For some users, this method of propulsion is better suited to their capabilities.

Push Rim/Hand Rim Grips

The Wijit comes with built-in push rims (or hand rims). For some users, switching over to using the push rims is preferrable for certain situations. But for many, standard metal push rims are too slick, not allowing a good grip for propulsion. It is for these users we suggest they consider special made hand rim grip covers.

Wheelchair Compatibility

The Wijit fits most standard manual wheelchairs using our wheelchair-specific Fit Kits. Check our Compatibility Chart below to see if your wheelchair is compatible with the Wijit.

If/when you find your wheelchair model, make a note of the “Fit Kit” number – you will need this information when filling out any forms associated wih purchasing the Wijit. If you didn't find your wheelchair in the Compatibility Chart or you still have questions, visit our Contact Us section to choose an option for contact; we may still be able to accommodate your specific requirements.

Please note: While we do our best to keep the compatibility chart up-to-date, it is not always possible. Wheelchair manufacturers are constantly updating their products and coming out with new designs. Be sure to contact us if in doubt, or if you are planning on purchasing a newer model wheelchair.
