The Wijit Driving and Braking System (DBS®) is a lever actuated propulsion system which can be retrofitted to most standard manual wheelchairs (SMW). The Wijit comes equipped with a host of features, all designed to add mobility, safety, health benefits, and most of all, independence, to those confined to a SMW. Some of the Wijits major features are as follows (click on each link for more detailed information):
A 1:2 gear ratio transmission with forward and reverse gears inside the Wijit's hub. The lever is used to propel the wheelchair instead of the push-rim. The combination of the lever drive and the internal gearing reduces the force required to move your wheelchair; making it much easier to do everyday tasks. Some of the benefits gained by using the Wijit DBS include:
By simply pulling in on the lever handles, the user's leveraged force is applied the Wijit's built-in braking system – allowing them to easily stop and steer their wheelchair, all while their hands remain safely on the lever's handle grips. With the user's hands always on the lever handles, friction burns, torn gloves, and dirty, callused hands are a thing of the past.
Below is a list of some of the great benefits gained by using the Wijit's braking system:
To shift between forward, neutral and reverse, the user rotates the Shift Paddle above the Handle Grip at the top of the Lever. The Shift Paddle was specifically designed for ease of use by those with impaired hand function. The Shift Paddles can be shifted into reverse, to back onto lifts and elevators or for general maneuvering around your home. With one Shift Paddle in forward, and the other in reverse, you can literally turn in place. All shifting and subsequent maneuvering is done while the user's hands stay comfortably on the lever handles. The following is a quick summary of some of the Paddle Shifter’s main benefits:
Once installed, a quick release button located in the center of the Wijit's hub makes it easy to both remove and reattach the wheels. The quick release button requires a firm push to activate the release of the Wijit wheel assembly. While pushing and holding the quick-release button, firmly pull the Wijit out of its axle receiver housing (this process could require the wheelchair to be lifted up, turned on its side, or tilted to some degree to allow removal). Once removed, the wheelchair and Wijit wheels can be easily stored or transported. In some cases, depending on the original wheels’ axle length, the wheelchair's wheels can still be interchanged with the Wijit wheels. When ready, the Wijit wheels can be reattached, by firmly pushing and holding the quick-release button while inserting the Wijit's axle back into the axle housing. The following is a quick list of some of the Wijit's quick-release benefits:
The Wijit DBS fits most of the standard manual wheelchairs on the market today by using our proprietary chair-specific Fit Kits. Check our Wheelchair Compatibility Chart in our Purchasing section to check if your wheelchair is compatible with the Wijit DBS.
